safe environment for holistic inpatient alcohol & drug treatment    I’m sure that many of you wonder why the Employee (friend or family member) who is identified as having a problem with drugs and alcohol is admitted to Veritas Villa for treatment in a residential inpatient program as opposed to just going to see an addiction therapist a few nights a week while remaining on the job and living at home. There are good reasons for inpatient treatment of the disease of chemical dependency, mostly supported by the very nature of this disease and its special characteristics. The medical definition describes the chemical dependency disease as having “…genetic, psychosocial and environmental factors influencing its development” and being characterized by “… distortions in thinking and most notably denial”.

 

Denial of Alcohol and Drug Problems

    What is denial? Most chemically dependent people using alcohol and drugs deny that they have a problem; they deny that they need help; they deny that their lives are falling apart because of their inability to stop using drugs and alcohol, and so on. Until this denial is broken through, no amount of treatment or therapy will be effective. Addressing denial takes time and intense clinical effort and requires the intensity and structure of the inpatient setting. There, separated from the individual activities of daily life, the source of the addictive drug and the pressures of contributing factors, patients can be guided by staff, peers and role models into a therapeutic frame of mind conducive to recovery.

Holistic Inpatient Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs at Veritas Villa

In Veritas Villa's holistic inpatient alcohol and drug treatment programs one of the first assignments counselors give their clients is to write an autobiography which is reviewed in an individual session and in group therapy. Hopefully, clients will gain insight into what’s happened in their lives since they started to fall apart as they continued to use alcohol and drugs. Once they recognize the negative impacts of the disease, and the helplessness they feel trying to deal with their alcohol and drug dependency on their own, continuing treatment becomes relatively simple. How do we get them to this point: At the Villa we offer the client intense clinical care in a safe environment conducive to the goal of complete abstinence.

    Also, studies on alcohol and drug dependency have shown that the chemically dependent person displays a marked change in cognitive functioning after approximately three weeks (and it is only in an inpatient setting that we can guarantee abstinence – an outpatient program has no control over usage), the fog starts to clear and all the work they are doing in counseling, in group therapy, in their autobiography and other written assignments, by listening to the lectures and by interaction with the fellowship starts to mean something.  The counselor is on hand to identify this vital point in alcohol and drug treatment and assist the client in putting all the pieces together.  This is only possible in an inpatient setting.

    Holistic residential, inpatient treatment for chemical dependency works because it provides a safe environment and the amount of time necessary to break down the wall of denial, the biggest obstacle to successful alcohol and drug addiction treatment and recovery.
